Of All the Legal States; Why Colorado?
“Why did you move to Colorado?”, is another popular question lately. Well, step one was the decision to move to a “legal” state. I did a lot of research on the different states that had legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use. Each state has taken its own approach to the licensing and management of dispensaries, medical programs, cannabis clubs, and other aspects of supervised cannabis and has written its cannabis laws accordingly. I think it’s safe to say that each state has appealing qualities, but there was a method to my madness. I realized I wanted a state where cannabis was legalized as well as a state that fostered a progressive attitude towards cannabis too. In that respect, Colorado had three winning qualities to it that I just couldn’t turn down; freedom of speech, opportunities for continuing cannabis education, and hands on learning opportunities.
Continuing cannabis education is something that is important to me for myself and my followers. One of the main reasons for moving to a legal state is that I can converse and express my opinion on cannabis here and not be worried about what will happen to me. My friends and I sit inside local coffee shops and discuss new strains we have found, the benefits they offer and technologies that are on the horizon in the industry. Colorado is a very progressive place about cannabis and we are very free here to openly talk about its medicinal benefits. I’ve never once felt that I was in danger or at risk from talking about my medicine in public. But more importantly, recreational users have that same freedom and are able to discuss their likes and dislikes just as they would about their favorite beer.
Just being able to freely talk about cannabis was a start, but I needed to be in a place where I could get the evolving education about cannabis that I needed. Colorado seemed to be a wellspring of knowledge on the plant, and the people here are always reaching to expand that knowledge. From growing, to processing concentrates, Colorado is constantly gaining new techniques and methods to create premier and safe products. The cannabis community in Colorado is competitive and each company is always trying to have the best and cleanest products on the market. This means that people are constantly doing research and development on different methods to deliver on that goal.
In college, I realized that hands on learning techniques resonated well with me and helped me to understand subjects on a deeper level. Being able to integrate myself into the cannabis industry is much easier when you live in a state that is legal. Attending events, talking with people in the industry, and getting to bounce ideas back and forth is how I find that I gain most of my deeper understandings. All the internet and book research is useful and gives me a foundation of knowledge, but there is something about talking with people and listening to their passion that has allowed me to gain a greater grasp on cannabis.
Being in an illegal state was very limiting to the ability to be in the line of work that I wanted to be in and moving to Colorado gave me the tools to be able to create what I am doing today. Colorado spoke to me on so many levels and I would be a liar if I didn’t admit that its beautiful landscapes weren’t a huge motivation for moving here also. I have always lived an active and outdoor life, but the change of scenery was much needed. I will always be proud of the choice that I made to move out to Colorado because my life has changed for the better. Even without the blog and all the other things I’ve accomplished in my career I am just happy to be healthy and living a normal life. Cannabis gave me my life back and I’ll always be here to preach about all the medicinal benefits and its use as an alternative to pharmaceuticals!
