How to get Started on a Social Media Presence
Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions, through social media and the website, about how I built The Traveling Stoner brand. The questions range from “how did you get popular on social media” to “how can I help spread awareness about cannabis like you”. I am honestly flattered that you guys would come to me about advice on how to build your presence on social media platforms. I’ve put together a couple of tips that I have helped me as I made this journey to become The Traveling Stoner.
Let me start by saying that being in the social media scene involves opening your life up for everybody to see, and that includes the good, the bad and the ugly. There are days where it is hard to slap on a smile and sit in front of the camera, but I pull myself together because I’m passionate about cannabis education and connecting with all of you. This is so important to me and the vision I have, but it is certainly not for everyone. Almost daily I get messages asking personal questions about my life, cannabis use, relationship and other aspects which I answer (to the best of my ability) and am happy to do so. To put your name out there you must be prepared to have those who will pry into your life in hopes to get to know you better! People sometimes say that I am too open, but I feel that it is important for you guys to see that I am genuine and a normal(ish) person!
Another thing that has helped me so much since I started The Traveling Stoner has been my ongoing cannabis education. When somebody asks me a question, or there is a subject that I feel I lack knowledge or understanding, I will sit down and do research until I feel that I could adequately explain it to somebody else. I will never stop trying to learn about cannabis and its medicinal benefits. Secretly I make it a goal of mine to try and learn even the tiniest new fact about cannabis every day. Our understanding of cannabis is always evolving and I don’t ever want to be caught with my pants down when it comes to the plant I’m so passionate about. Be knowledgeable on the way that you want to present yourself and your message!
Attending events and getting yourself out there is another great way to network and get involved. For those of you in legal states there are often events, or seshs where you can go and meet other people in your states cannabis community. Here in Colorado we have a lot of opportunities to mingle with others from the industry and taking those opportunities can be beneficial! As somebody who deals with social anxiety I can understand that these things are not always an option for everybody, but I wanted to stress how important it is to network with others in the cannabis community.
Lastly be creative and have fun with it. Copying and ripping others off is lame and it’s so much better to be yourself! Find something that you’re good at (comedy, sports, hula hopping, food, photography, ect) and incorporate that into your presentation. The more authentic and genuine you are with your outlets the better response you will get. It’s all about connecting and growing together! We can accomplish anything if we all believe and work together!
